My name Is Charles Minett and I'm The Product Design Director for Blok and I'm responsible along with my team for the visual Identity and mechanical engineering of all Blok products since Its Integration into Monitor Audio Group.
For Stax 2G the focus was to give Blok customers flexibility in configuration and materiality without impacting the clean minimal aesthetic which was so successful for the Stax 1G.
This resulted us in designing a new modular system of hi-fi furniture allowing the customer to pick and choose the number of shelves they want at the height best suited for their equipment.
There were several unique challenges for the Stax project. One of the early ones was the Introduction of a new shelf material into the design. Stax 1G only used tempered glass for the shelves which was practical solution, but it was an aesthetic which didn't appeal to everyone.
To solve this issue, we needed to introduce a warmer more home friendly material to the palette and for this we turned to plywood. Ply is a great material due to Its high mass and load bearing capabilities It Is also available in a huge variety of finishes. During the development we trialled a significant number of thicknesses and finish variations to give us a selection of finishes to suit a wide customer base. We now have an ultra-contemporary natural ash finish with exposed ply edges and a much more subtle black ash with toned down edges.
For me It's the perfect balance of a clean beautiful aesthetic with Hi-Fi performance credentials. We didn't just want to create a product which looks good and is the right size to fit your Hi-Fi equipment It had to help that equipment perform at Its best as well. Introducing features like mass fillable support 'Bloks' and easy Height adjustment on both carpeted and hardwood floors really gives a best of both worlds’ solution.
Yes, this was a key focus of the design and another area where we stand above the competition. We really focussed on making both assembly and adjustment an easy and positive experience.
For assembly, four simple magnetic bolts are all that’s required for each shelf and these are easily tightened with the bespoke magnetic assembly tool. All the bolts are the same so there’s no confusion. Then for levelling the product on uneven floors we have provided a height adjustment wheel which looks around the feet allowing you to level your equipment after it has been placed on the rack. This is particularly useful for anyone with a turntable!!
All Blok products are designed to our transparent design philosophy our focus here is to ensure all the products we make blend into the environment they are positioned ensuring the audio experience is put first and not the object.
This is just as important for a speaker stand or hi-fi rack as it is for a loudspeaker or amplifier. We see the future of Hi-Fi racks to be performance based but home friendly customisable solutions allowing your hi-fi system to grow and expand naturally over the years. The team at Blok are dedicated to designing ageless robust furniture which will last generations.
